Study confirms best-in-class manufacturers 53 percent more likely to leverage MES

ATLANTA – January 16, 2008 - Visiprise, Inc., a leader in manufacturing execution solutions for the integrated enterprise, today announced it is an underwriter of the Aberdeen Group research report: “Compliance and Traceability in Manufacturing.” The report reveals manufacturers that adopt manufacturing execution system (MES) capabilities are more likely to realize best-in-class performance levels.

The report was created to better understand key capabilities that help manufacturers manage compliance and traceability initiatives. Aberdeen surveyed more than 650 manufacturing executives to categorize manufacturers based on four key performance indicators (KPIs): On time delivery, response time to non-conforming shipments, first pass yield (FPY) and products manufactured in compliance.

Best-in-class manufacturers are defined as the top 20 percent of performers while laggards represent the bottom 30 percent in a weighted average across the four KPIs. Best-in-class manufacturers performed at the following levels:

• 98 percent products in compliance
• 95 percent FPY
• 36 minute response time to non-conforming shipments
• 96 percent on-time delivery

The report notes “a direct relationship between best-in-class performance and technology adoption.”  Companies experiencing best-in-class performance are 53 percent more likely to have invested in MES capabilities than companies experiencing laggard performance to support their compliance and traceability initiatives.

Aberdeen further reports companies striving for best-in-class status can gain the critical visibility into product and process information across their value chain by establishing real-time interoperability between MES and other systems.

“Best-in-class performance is differentiated by the adoption of MES and Quality Management System capabilities, which helps ensure comprehensive product and process traceability for manufacturers,” said Mehul Shah, research analyst, Aberdeen Group.  “Best-in-class manufacturers are further linking these applications with enterprise solutions, so that this traceability continues across the supply chain to customer receipt and beyond; enabling manufacturers to quickly and effectively respond to non-conformance incidents.”
